The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes March as National Nutrition Month. This initiative aims to educate our country about the benefits of maintaining a healthy diet and eating habits. Exercise is another key focus during National Nutrition Month, as paired with eating healthy, exercise is a key component in improving both our physical and emotional well-being.

Having National Nutrition Month fall in March helps provide those of us who have long abandoned our New Years resolutions with a reason to start fresh. If you have managed to persevere and continue with your New Years resolution, National Nutrition Month gives us a reason to keep going.

Here are 4 steps you can take to celebrate National Nutrition Month:

  1. Drink 1 Gallon of Water Each Day: Staying hydrated has a number of significant benefits to our overall health. It both strengthens our immune system and speeds up our metabolism, effectively maximizing our body’s constitution. Drinking plenty of water also alleviates headaches, cramps, and muscle soreness. While the recommended daily amount will vary depending on who you ask, the average amount you’ll see from experts hovers around 1 gallon every day.
  2. Exercise on a Daily Basis: Working out every day doesn’t mean you have to drag yourself to the gym before or after work each day. If you hate going to the gym, take up boxing, yoga, hiking or pick-up basketball. Exercise shouldn’t be an activity you dread; it should something you look forward to every day.
  3. Improve Your Diet: Like working out, improving your diet doesn’t have to be a drastic lifestyle change. Instead of eating fast food or frozen foods for dinner, try cooking for yourself. This will force you to be cognizant of the ingredients that go into your food, which is a far departure from when you heat up frozen foods that are oversaturated with artificial ingredient.
  4. Change Your Dietary Habits: Improving the overall quality of the food that you consume is just step in maintaining a healthy dietary schedule, you also need to avoid bad habits like undereating, overeating or eating late at night. Also, make sure you eat breakfast every morning, seeing as it helps speed up your metabolism and gives you the boost of energy you need to kickstart your day.
